EDID6503: Instructional Design Theories, Models and Strategies

This was the second of eleven (11) core courses I undertook in the MSc in Instructional Design and Technology. One of the main assignments in this course was an interview with a theorist in the field, my interviewee was Mr. Garrison ‘Control Interaction Theory’. We got to examine different instructional models and identify the one that would describe our environment. We had to state any prevalent instructional strategies found in our environment, then using the instructional models identified, we had to create a model that best illustrates our work environment, then add it to my group member’s individual creation to come up with a combined one. This course posed two main problems, the first being that my school does not have an actual Model and trying to accommodate all the different subject teachers and their teaching styles was very taxing. I have now taken this opportunity to request that as a school we draw up a model of our own, maybe the one I have created for this assignment may even be taken into consideration. The second problem was the sourcing of an interviewee. During this course we got to explore the relationship between instructional design, instructional technology and distance learning and do a timeline of them, different Instructional strategies, categories of instructional strategies, instructional models - their strengths and limitations, a variety of learning approaches to instruction and learning outcomes that can be linked to these approaches. We also got to create a case study geared towards my peers which allowed them to complete the learning outcomes within their own current environment. The case addressed all of the types of learning outcomes represented in the course readings.

At the start of this course we had to create a concept map, and then about ¾ way of the course we had to create another, to show what has changed, and a reflection on the course thus far, we also had to give an explanation of original map. Did not really like doing the concept maps, but I liked the idea behind it, much like these blog posts it allowed me to consolidate my knowledge.

One artefact that displays as evidence of my experience is found below;
